Chapter 14

“LUPE TORTILLA still okay with you?” Travis asked as he steered Erik out of the gallery toward his car.

“Sure,” Erik answered distractedly, still replaying Liam’s words in his head. He wasn’t really hungry, so whatever Travis wanted was fine with him.

Travis shot him a glance but didn’t say anything during the short drive to the Mexican restaurant other than to grumble about Erik not appreciating a Houston institution. That lasted until they were settled at a table with menus in hand and drinks on the way.

“Who put a stick up Liam’s ass?” Travis asked. “I’ve never been his favorite person, but I thought he liked you.”

“I think it was something I said,” Erik said slowly. Or didn’t say, he added to himself. He hadn’t missed how Liam’s face fell when he’d ignored his offer to show him some of the places in Houston that weren’t part of Out and About’s schedule. It had taken him by surprise, and he hadn’t known how to answer, so he’d changed the subject. That wasn’t completely true—he knew how he’d like to answer, but since that wasn’t an option, he’d sidestepped.

“What did you say? It couldn’t have been that bad. You’re too nice of a guy to say something obnoxious,” Travis said after the waiter had dropped off their margaritas and left again.

“What does Liam have against you?” Erik countered, taking a sip of the icy drink even though his stomach was roiling uneasily. “Don’t tell me you hit on him?” The idea made him even more uneasy.

“No, I dated Kate for a while. It ended with us still on speaking terms, but I think he’s never forgiven me for things not working out,” Travis replied as he took a sip of his own drink. “Never mind that she was the one who ended things, although if she hadn’t, I probably would have before too long. She’s great, but we weren’t right for each other. But you didn’t answer my question.”

Erik frowned, though the server delivering their sizzling fajitas saved him from having to answer immediately. He really didn’t want to talk about it, but he’d known Travis long enough to realize he wouldn’t let go easily. And wasn’t this why he’d wanted to make friends in Houston? To have someone to talk to about both good things and bad ones? Even if he wasn’t sure himself which category this fell into.

“He… he asked me out,” he said softly once the waiter had walked away.

“Damn, you lucky dog. He’s a looker for sure. Where are you going? Besides straight to bed.”

“Nowhere,” Erik said with a sigh. “I didn’t answer him. He caught me by surprise, so I commented on something he said instead, and when he asked a second time, you came up.”

Travis winced. “Sorry for the cockblock. I would have talked with Kate longer if I’d known. But I’m sure he’ll ask again. He’s been flirting with you at every event.”

“Flirting? No way.” Erik shook his head. “I mean, he’s talked with
